Value Added Tax (VAT)

Value Added Tax (VAT)

  • Value Added Tax, commonly referred to as VAT and sometimes known as Goods and Services Tax (GST) in some countries, is an indirect tax levied on goods and services at each stage of the supply chain. This tax is charged incrementally based on the value added at every stage of production, distribution, or sale until it reaches the final consumer.
  • Unlike a simple sales tax that may be charged only once at the final point of sale, VAT is collected throughout the supply chain. Businesses registered for VAT collect the tax from their customers and remit it to the Government, but they can also reclaim VAT paid on their own purchases. This mechanism helps avoid the "cascade effect," where tax is paid repeatedly on the same value.
  • VAT is widely implemented globally and is used by over 180 countries, including all OECD members except the United States. Its sophisticated design helps overcome common issues associated with traditional sales taxes, making it a preferred taxation method worldwide.
  • In the UAE, VAT was introduced in 2018 in accordance with the GCC Common VAT Agreement, which was signed by all Gulf Cooperation Council member states. Since then, VAT has been a key component of the country’s taxation system, contributing to government revenues while ensuring compliance with international tax standards.
